Expanding our collection of products made from eelgrass, we’re thrilled to partner again with Danish-based Søuld to introduce Søuld Fragments, an acoustic wall tile crafted from a carbon-storing marine plant grown along the shores of Denmark. Throughout the year, Eelgrass is collected as it naturally washes ashore and, through a fully circular manufacturing process, is pressed into durable sheets. This material offers an extraordinary option for sustainable acoustic panels that benefit the environment, while adding a warm, natural aesthetic to any space.
True to its name, Søuld Fragments is produced from offcuts generated from the production of full eelgrass panels, giving a second life to an already environmentally sustainable resource. Smaller pieces and cuttings are reassembled into a refined design that celebrates the inherent beauty, variation, and texture of the natural material.
These modular tiles add dimensional texture, creating shadow, variation, and visual rhythm to any space. Easily installed, Søuld Fragments can be oriented horizontally, vertically, or combined to form bespoke patterns.
Founded by architects Tobias Øhrstrøm and Pi Fabrin, sustainable design engineers Gunnar Agerskov and Kirsten Lynge, and eelgrass thatcher Henning Johansen, Søuld is a Danish manufacturer that provides designers, architects, and contractors with sustainable and recyclable products made from eelgrass. Søuld was founded in 2010 with a mission to offer natural, eco-friendly alternatives to traditional building materials and to carry on a centuries-old practice deeply rooted in Danish culture.

“At Søuld, we believe that the end-use must be considered to honor the story of eelgrass fully. That is why we are making products that can have a long life, be recycled, and be part of systems designed for repair, disassembly, and reuse.”
Expanding on its line of acoustic products made from this remarkable material, Søuld explored a smaller, tile-based approach with a textured twist in Søuld Fragments. To learn more about the creative vision and development process behind Søuld Fragments, we sat down with the team in Denmark to chat about the inspiration that sparked the idea, the journey from concept to finished design, and how their innovative approach continues to shape the future of sustainable materials.

“The inspiration behind Fragments fundamentally comes from the idea of creating a repeatable pattern that also contributes to a spatial, ornamental quality while playing with light and shadow. I have always been fascinated by the beautiful brick ornamentation found in modernist architecture, particularly in Grundtvig’s Church, designed by one of the early masters of Danish modernism.”
